Zoolander Movie Review

Hello, fellow moviegoers!
Zoolander is a very divisive movie. There are people out there that absolutely love it and would put in their 10 favorite comedies of all time. While others, not so much. Some people believe that Zoolander is one of the dumbest films ever to grace the big screen. Both of these views are very showing in its score on Rotten Tomatoes, as the film only has a 64%. That barely gets it to a fresh rating, yet some people have such an incredible love for it. All these opinions have once again been stirred up as the trailer for the sequel, 2oolander*, was released a few days ago. So what better time to review this mega-popular film.
Zoolander stars Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrell. It is the story of Derek Zoolander, a not-too-bright male model. When his career is jeopardized by fellow model Hansel (Wilson), he is hypnotically given a task to assassinate a major political figure by an elite group of fashion designers. It sounds utterly ridiculous, but does is it ridiculously awesome or ridiculously stupid?

Zoolander is the definition of so-stupid-it's-funny comedy. I really enjoyed Zoolander. Is this a stupid movie? Yes, undeniably. This is one of the most stupid movies I've ever seen. It was so over-the-top and ridiculous, but I couldn't help but laugh throughout the entirety of the film
The largest portion of this film's success is due to Ben Stiller as the titular character. Derek Zoolander came off as this thoughtless, almost cringingly bad character, but it was Stiller's performance that made him so funny. He took a character that innately should have been so annoying and outrageously dumb, and made him enjoyable to watch. The entire film was on the shoulders of Stiller's performance as Zoolander. If he was bad in the film, I guarantee Zoolander would have a 5% on Rotten Tomatoes and possibly have killed his career.
Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell were also wonderful in this film. They were so great in their particular roles and fit their characters perfectly. I couldn't imagine anybody besides Ferrell as Mugatu. It's a very similar situation to Stiller's. Had Mugatu had a bad actor in that role, the whole movie would've been in trouble. Owen Wilson was very good as rival model Hansel. However, I do think that he could have very easily been replaced with a different actor and the quality of the film would stay the same overall.
A few of the jokes here and there did feel a little forced. They would stand out like a sore thumb whenever they would come about. It seemed to just make the movie uncomfortable and awkward to watch at times. However, there are so many individually great scenes that stand out in this movie . You almost completely forget about the unamusing scenes, some more than others. But almost all of the best scenes are so memorable. Whether it be the Gasoline-fight or a simple conversation with Derek and his boss, it was hilarious!
Zoolander is a stupid movie. Yet, I found myself thoroughly entertained with every minute of it. It's such a quotable movie as well. The one-liners almost always hit. Sometimes they wouldn't and it would make the film a bit of a dismal. At the end of the day, I did enjoy Zoolander. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, though quite a few embrace its dumbness. You have to have a very specific sense of humor to enjoy this movie.

7/10

*I would like to mention that 2oolander is a dumb title, even for this movie. I absolutely hate it when studios replace letters with numbers in the title of something. They think they're being clever, but it's just stupid! Other examples include Tak3n and Fant4stic. It's a terrible idea, and Hollywood really needs to stop doing it. How hard is it to put the two at the end? Zoolander 2. See! It's not that difficult!
