Hello, fellow moviegoers!
Why Him? is directed by John Hamburg, and it stars James Franco, Bryan Cranston, and Zoey Deutch. It follows an average family as they travel out to California to meet their college daughter's boyfriend over Christmas. Her boyfriend ends up being an eccentric internet star, who doesn't understand boundaries, and her dad does not approve one bit.
I was really looking forward to Why Him. I like Bryan Cranston and James Franco, and the trailers looked pretty funny, in my opinion. The actual film that was put out ended up being a disappointment.
Don't get me wrong, I laughed during this film, quite a bit at some parts, but not as frequently as I had hoped I would. The truly funny moments in this film are few and far between. The rest of the film is full of overly vulgar humor and awkward situations. I don't mind crude humor in a comedy if it feels natural. (I mean, Deadpool was my third favorite film of last year!) However, in Why Him, it feels like vulgarity for vulgarity's sake.
The film starts out pretty funny, and it ends on a high note, but it's towards the middle that this film really drags. The second act in this film didn't really do much for me. It just kind of came and went, then the movie was over. Again, there were a couple moments sprinkled in there that were funny, but not a lot.
Bryan Cranston and James Franco both did decent enough jobs in this film, but the one shining light in this film, to me, is Keegan-Michael-Key's character Gustav. Pretty much anytime he was on screen, I chuckled a little bit. A majority of those truly funny moments I mentioned earlier involved this character. He worked great as a side character, I just wish he would've been in a better film.
I don't have whole lot to say about this film, so this review is a bit shorter. Overall, Why Him wasn't as funny as I wanted it to be, and it definitely slows down towards the middle. That being said, it does have a few really funny moments and Keegan-Michael-Key was great. I would recommend Why Him if you're looking for just any comedy to watch, but you don't need to go out of your way to see this one.
