Thoughts on the 'Sly Cooper Movie'

3/9/2016

Hello, fellow moviegoers!
When I was growing up, the most popular gaming system was without a doubt the Playstation 2. Literally everybody amongst my group of friends had one. One of the best parts were the games that were made exclusively for the Playstation 2. In my household, the most popular of all of those was the Sly Cooper series.
So, you can imagine my excitement when they released a trailer to announce that there was an animated film in the works, advertising a 2016 release. The Sly Cooper series has such a rich story, and it’s absolutely one that can translate well to the big screen. Then there was almost no news that came out in the weeks following. Those weeks turned into months, and those months turned into years. Now it is 2016 and we’ve still heard nothing more about the project. So is the Sly Cooper Movie still happening? Here’s what you need to know.

It doesn’t take an astrophysicist to see that the Sly Cooper film is most likely not coming out this year. Unless the filmmakers have silently been working on it. That thought process got me curious as to who was actually involved with this film. The film is supposed to be directed by Kevin Munroe, a name you might be familiar with if video game film adaptations are your thing. Munroe hasn’t directed much, but the largest film on his resume is another big Playstation 2 game adaptation, the Ratchet and Clank film set for release in the end of April.
So, it’s easy to assume that Munroe has had his hands pretty full the past few years with Ratchet and Clank. But what was going on with Sly Cooper? Had Sony and Munroe forgotten about it? I took it upon myself to ask Munroe via Twitter what was going on. Munroe was quick to admit that the film was most likely not going to make the 2016 release. However, that’s up to the producers. To add on to that, Munroe also stated that he hasn’t touched the project in the past year. You can read the conversation below:
Kruzereviews:
“@kevmunroe Hey! I know you’re busy with @RatchetMovie right now, but is that @SlyCooperMovie still happening? Will it make the 2016 release?”

Munroe:
“@kruze_reviews Yeah, I’d say not this year, but that’s a better question for the producers/financiers. I haven’t touched it for a year.”
So, for all of you Sly Cooper fans out there, it looks like it’s going to be a bit of a wait until we see that film that was announced two years ago. We also have to start to look at the possibility that we may never get the film. It may have gotten stuck in “Development Hell”. Or, maybe Sony pulled the plug on it completely when Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (the fourth installment and first on the Playstation 3) did not do as well as expected. However, it’s important to note that this is all speculation.
So, if we ever do get that Sly Cooper Movie, it’s probably not going to be for a while. However, we do have a plethora of other video game films to keep us busy until then. Ratchet and Clank is set for release on April 29th, Warcraft on June 10th, and Assassin’s Creed on December 21st.
