Hello, fellow moviegoers! Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is now officially out and playing in theaters! Lots of critics loathed the film, but personally, I thought it was pretty good. It wasn’t perfect, but I found it very enjoyable. I’m even seeing again later today! Many of the people who have seen it now want to talk about what happened! I know I do! So here are some things from the film that really surprised me! Careful, there are spoilers in this article! So, if you haven’t seen the film yet, go out and see it then come read this article! * * * * * * * * * * SPOILER ALERT! Batman Kills One thing in this film that caught a lot of people off guard was the fact that Batman clearly kills people in this film. Although it’s never directly him killing someone with his bare hands, (except in that dream sequence) he definitely uses his environment. Personally, I’m torn about this. On one hand, Batman is supposed to never kill anyone (even though he totally does in the other films). But on the other hand, perhaps something happened in his past that pushed him over the edge. Maybe the death of Robin drove him to a whole new level. However, at this point, that is just pure speculation. It’s definitely something they could’ve and should’ve addressed in the film. They definitely had the time to. Justice League Teases I’ve heard many critics complaining about how they teased the Justice League in the film, even comparing it to the overload of setup in Avengers: Age of Ultron. My counterpoint to that is, with Age of Ultron they didn’t need to set anything up. Yes, I get Marvel will be introducing a lot of new characters soon, but people will go see those films purely because they have the name Marvel attached to them (e.g. Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy). However, with WB/DC they need to set up the rest of this universe. It’s a necessity. People aren’t sure about this new DC Extended Universe yet. So they need to know what they can expect in the future. On the topic of the actual teases, I thought they worked extremely well. While I didn’t love the film as a whole, it did a fantastic job getting the audience excited to see where they go from here. In case you didn’t notice, the order in which the characters were teased was the order in which their films are to be released. The photo of Wonder Woman was taken directly from the set of her solo film which hits theaters next year. I thought both of the teases for The Flash were great, granted he’s my favorite superhero! When he talks to Bruce in that vision (probably time-travel), the whole audience was captivated by what they were seeing. However, they should’ve done a better job explaining to non-comic-book readers who that was. The video of him stopping a robbery in a convenience store was pretty cool as well. Even though Aquaman is in all of the merchandising for this film, he’s barely in it. The Flash is in this film more than he is! His tease was a little disappointing. It was really interesting how you could see his eyes in the depths of the ocean first, and then he swam into view. But then he just kind of stayed there and did nothing. He looked really cool, but he did absolutely nothing. I thought the tease for Cyborg was pretty good as well. It gave audiences a clear look at how this character became who he is. I’m very curious to see where they take his character A Clear Winner The actual Batman vs Superman fight was a little short-lived, but it was fantastic while it was happening! You could tell that Batman really had planned out every little detail, which made the fight very interesting to watch because you never knew what would happen next. Also, I thought Batman turning Kryptonite into a gas was a great idea! One thing that did bother me a bit was that Superman really didn’t want to fight Batman. Yes, they had set up earlier in the film that Superman didn’t like him, but when they actually fought, it was because Lex Luthor kidnapped his mother and forced Superman to fight Batman. It gave a valid reason for the fight to happen, but it would have been so much more investing had Superman wanted to fight Batman. One of the best decisions I believe they made in this film, is to have a clear winner of the fight. A lot of people (including myself) thought it would end up being a draw. No, Batman quite obviously won this fight! He was even about to kill Superman when he was told about Clark’s mother Martha. (Seriously!?! How has the fact that Batman’s and Superman’s mothers share a first name gone unnoticed ‘til now!?!) The Death of Superman This is the part of the film that I feel really divided people. Warner Bros and DC took a chance and did something nobody expected them to do. They killed off Superman, kind of. When Doomsday stabbed Superman with that spike, immediately I thought they’ll probably just put him in the sun again. I mean, he did just survive getting nuked. Nope, he actually died! Personally, I really thought this worked from a narrative point of view. The movie starts with Superman being a very divisive person in the world and many think they can’t trust him. When Superman dies to save mankind; however, it really shows the world that he had nothing but good intentions. It gave people a reason to like Superman. Also, I really enjoyed how they had two funerals going on simultaneously. One in Metropolis for Superman, and one in Kansas for Clark Kent. It really made it more emotional seeing people mourn for both sides of the character. That being said, DC really dug themselves into a hole by doing that. Now they are going to have to start the Justice League film by explaining how Superman is alive again. I realize that the dirt was floating at the end just like it did in Man of Steel when he was about to start flying, and I thought I heard a heartbeat but maybe that was my imagination. But DC is really going to have to think of some truly believable reason to bring him back to life almost right away. So what did you think of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice?
