Star Wars: The Force Awakens Box Office Predictions

12/9/2015

Hello, fellow moviegoers!
In case you haven’t heard, there’s a little film called Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening in just over a week. It may or may not become one of the biggest opening weekends of all time. Maybe? Sense the sarcasm there?
The new Star Wars film is on track to shatter Box Office records, and it's already shattered a major one. When tickets went on sale a little while back, Star Wars set the new record for most tickets on the first day available. Beating out the previous record-holder, 2011’s The Hunger Games, by over eight times! There is no doubt that this film is going to be at the top of the weekly box-office for a while. But, how long is a while? Will it stay for four weekends like Furious 7 earlier this year? Will it be like Titanic and stay until April with a ground-breaking 15 weeks?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to be a box-office monster! It is currently on track for about an 185-210 million dollar opening weekend domestically. Personally, I would place it a little higher than that, maybe about the $215 million mark. Which is incredible!
The record for biggest opening weekend domestically was for several years held by The Avengers with $207 million. That record was broken earlier this year by Jurassic World, which scored a surprising $208 mil. 2015 has been a fantastic year box-office wise, as it looks like that record is going to be beaten again by Star Wars.
How long will it stay at the top of the weekend Box Office, though? Even though it would be awesome to see Star Wars reach Titanic level numbers, it’s not going to happen. I don’t think a 15-week number one stretch is ever going to happen again. This is due to the sheer number of films coming out nowadays. It seems like every weekend there are at least two or three new movies in wide release. That isn’t to say that Titanic’s overall gross will never be beaten, just not in a while.
It’s easy to see that Star Wars is going to be number one for the rest of December, plowing over Alvin and the Chipmunks, Daddy’s Home, Concussion, and Point Break. I do believe these films (with the exclusion of Point Break) will do well, just not that well.
It’s when we get into the New Year that Star Wars is going to start to stagger. The first week will be a breeze. Both The Hateful Eight and The Revenant go into wide-release. While these movies look awesome, I’ve barely heard any of the movie-going audience talking about them. You’ll see a lot of hardcore film fans seeing these.
The weekend of January 15th is when Star Wars could lose its number 1 spot. Ride Along 2 and Norm of the North both hit theaters that Friday. Since the first Ride Along was a surprise hit, we can expect good numbers from the sequel. Also, parents are going to want to take their kids to a new movie, as the last kids’ movie came out a month prior at this point. So, Norm of the North is going to be their choice.
By some miracle, if Star Wars makes it through that weekend, it’ll blow over Dirty Grandpa with ease in the next week, but it’s going to stop after that. As the weekend of January 29th is when we meet the behemoth that will be Kung Fu Panda 3. The Kung Fu Panda franchise is mega-popular among kids, and whenever the trailer plays in a theater, you can audibly hear kids asking their parents to take them to it.
So by my estimate, Star Wars is going to last about 4-6 weeks at the top of the Box Office. Those weeks are going to produce some staggering profits for Disney and Lucasfilm. But, it will get dethroned before it can even be considered an opponent for Titanic. Although, if the movie is as awesome as we all hope it’ll be, then we can expect some Titanic level responses for Episode VIII.
