Reaction to the 2016 Academy Awards!

2/29/2016

Comments

Hello, fellow moviegoers!
The 88th Annual Academy Awards were last night, and there are plenty of things to talk about. Who won? Who got snubbed? Here are my thoughts!

Picture
Original Score
I was so glad to see Ennio Morricone win the Best Original Score Oscar for his work on The Hateful Eight. The score for The Hateful Eight was such an amazing work of art. Also, it’s about time that Morricone won an Oscar! If you don’t know, this is the same composer that did The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly fifty years ago!

Animated Film

Was anybody really surprised Inside Out won? There’s really not much to say about it that hasn’t been said before. Inside Out was by far the best animated films of the year, and it deserved this award. Inside Out is one of Pixar’s best; it’s such an original concept that was executed magnificently! If you haven’t seen Inside Out yet, do yourself a favor. See it!

Visual Effects
I thought Star Wars was going to win this award. Which is why I was so excited to see Ex Machina take the prize! The visual effects in Ex Machina haven’t been talked about very much because a lot of people don’t even realize they’re there! These visuals fit into the film seamlessly! I’m glad to see a smaller film like this win this award! It’s like they always say, “sometimes less is more”.

Director
I have absolutely no complaints about Alejandro G. Innaritu winning the Oscar for Best Director for The Revenant. That being said, I believe that the award should have gone to George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road. What Miller did with Fury Road made that film and experience. However, The Revenant does not work as well as it does without Innaritu's direction. Innaritu has won two years in a row now for amazing films. He’s a fantastic director, and I’m excited to see what he does next!

Supporting Actress
There’s not much that I can say about Alicia Vikander winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress because I haven’t seen The Danish Girl. However, I can say that she was awesome in Ex Machina. I'm thinking they gave her the award simply because they accidentally nominated her for the wrong film! If her performance in Ex Machina is any indication of how good she was in The Danish Girl, then she definitely deserved it.

Supporting Actor
Personally, I’m torn on the results of for Best Supporting Actor. If you read my Oscar Predictions, you know that I thought Sylvester Stallone would win for Creed, but Tom Hardy should’ve for The Revenant. Turns out, I was completely wrong. Bridge of Spies’ Mark Rylance ended up winning the award.
While there was definitely nothing wrong with Rylance’s performance in Bridge of Spies, it was definitely not the best of the year. If I had to rank them, I would put all four of the other actors in that category above him. I would have been much happier had literally anybody else won. But hey, what can you do?

Lead Actress
Brie Larson winning Best Lead Actress for Room was easy to see coming. Though, that doesn’t make it any less special. Her performance in Room was by far the best performance by an actress all year, no doubt about it. She worked so well as this boy's mother and had such great chemistry with Jacob Tremblay! She absolutely deserves the award, and her career is only going up from here.

Lead Actor
FINALLY! It’s about time that Leonardo DiCaprio has won an Oscar! All of the jokes, and all of the memes (although, they were pretty funny) can now end! While I personally would’ve awarded the Oscar to Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, there is no argument against DiCaprio winning for The Revenant. He really deserves it, and all I can say is congratulations!

Best Picture
For a little while, I was starting to become afraid that Spotlight would not win Best Picture, as the film only won one other Oscar all night! I was beginning to think that The Revenant’s momentum would carry it all the way! I was relieved to see The Academy still give the award to the most-deserving film. Spotlight was a brilliant film that everybody needs to see! All of the actors and actresses in the film were awesome, the screenplay and the direction were amazing, and it’s just an overall breathtaking film! Spotlight deserves the Best Picture win!
