Hello, fellow moviegoers! In case you didn’t know, today is the day Marty McFly and Doc Brown arrive from 1985 in their time-traveling DeLorean. While the time we live in may not be the future Back to the Future predicted, some things would definitely shock Marty and Doc. One of these things is the impact their movie has had on the film industry. So how big of an effect did Back to the Future really have? Back to the Future has undeniably had an enormous effect on the film industry. But it has also affected society as a whole. Think about it, if you were to walk up to a random stranger on the street and yell “Great, Scott!” or “1.21 Gigawatts!”, a majority of people would know what you’re talking about. They may give you a strange look and walk away as fast as they can, but they will understand nonetheless. Let’s be honest, not every blockbuster movie that comes out actually respects the intelligence of its audience. That’s not to say they aren’t awesome, but their plots can get pretty simple. Back to the Future was brave enough to tackle something as complicated as time-travel, and trust its audience to comprehend what was happening. Which is a quality that may not have been popular at the time, but they did it anyway. Look at the market now, we have films such as Inception, Edge of Tomorrow, and The Martian hitting the big screen. All of which have very complicated elements to them, yet all of them have become exceptionally popular! The shift in the market since Back to the Future’s release is irrefutable. The film also made Robert Zemeckis a household name. He became a director that studios were dying to have helm their films. Because of this, he was given opportunities to direct such films as Forrest Gump, Cast Away, or The Walk. If Robert Zemeckis hadn’t directed those movies, they may not be as fantastic as they are. Imagine if the world were a place where “Run Forrest, Run!” is simply a line from a movie that nobody’s heard of. It’s a sad thought. All of these things; boxes of chocolate, intelligent films like Inception, and even time-travel itself have been affected by the Back to the Future series in some way. Without it, some of these things might not even exist to the extent that we know them. Back to the Future has had a colossal effect on cinema. We may not realize it at times, but so many iconic things can be attributed to this franchise in some way. How are you going to celebrate Marty and Doc’s arrival from the past? Maybe you should go out of your way to yell “Great, Scott” at someone as they walk by. I am personally going to try and watch the movie tonight (if my schedule allows).
