Focus Movie Review

Hello fellow moviegoers!
Focus stars Will Smith and Margot Robbie, and it is about this con-man named Nicky and him dealing with a girl he trains to follow in his footsteps. It is the story of these two as they go through life conning people and kind of developing a romance. I was actually pretty excited for this movie. But does it really deserve your money?

Honestly, no. This movie does not deserve your money. It disappoints me to say it, but this film is a complete misfire. It starts out with Will Smith being all sly, conning people left and right, and it really gets you on board. You start to get really excited for the rest of this movie because of how good the beginning is. But then it doesn't really go anywhere. It just kind of chugs along giving you a little bit of story here and there, but in the end it really doesn't deliver.
The acting in the film was good. In fact the performances given by Will Smith and Margot Robbie are definitely the best parts. If you are a Will Smith fan, you'll most likely enjoy this movie. But if you are kind of neutral on that subject it's probably not for you.
One thing that this movie really got wrong, is that there isn't really an antagonist until the very end. Even then, it feels like the big scene with him is only characterization but you don't realize until afterwards that you were watching the climax of the film. It really is just kind of a boring movie. For example, I NEVER go to the bathroom in the middle of the movie because I want to focus on it. (Probably not a good idea, but I do it anyway). I actually went to the bathroom in this movie, because nothing was happening and I felt like nothing was going to happen. When I got back, I asked my friend what I missed. You not what he said? "Nothing really". It's just so boring!
Another thing is, the movie really doesn't know what it is. At times, it feels like a cool film about con-artists, then it seems to be turning into a comedy, and then it's a romance! The comedy in the movie missed for the most part, and when it turns into a romance you really don't buy it. The relationship just feels so forced between Smith and Robbie's characters that you really don't believe it could actually happen.
Whenever the movie finally gives you a little bit of conflict, it is really well done! There is a scene in the movie where Smith is gambling and he's losing all of this money, but he keeps going bigger with the amount being bet. I was actually on the edge of my seat a couple of times. But then they completely avoid the consequences by saying it was a con the entire time! I was okay with it at first, but then they say that with almost every major conflict in the film. It was alright at first. But when it started happening over and over again it really started to get annoying!
The thing that really drove the movie home (in terms of it not being very good) was the way it ended. The ending it just so abrupt. There is a scene happening and it feels just like the rest of the movie, but it's not until afterwards that you realize that was the climax. Then they try adding an emotional depth to it, and it really doesn't hit. After that, the movie just ends without warning. It was so disappointing.
So overall, this is not a movie you should see in theatres. It was boring, lack-luster, and it really just feels like they made it for the sake of making money off of Will Smith's name, not to actually make a good film. At most, you could rent it on DVD when it comes out. But it really doesn't live up to expectations. The only somewhat redeeming quality is the performances that are given by Smith and Robbie. In the end, the more you think about this movie the worse it gets. And that's one of the biggest flaws a movie can ever have.
