Hello, fellow moviegoers! It’s easy to see that the most popular show on TV right now is Game of Thrones by a landslide. This show has become such a hit, that it’s literally impossible to avoid spoilers. I feel so sorry for those of you who are not caught up. But fear not, this will be a spoiler-free article. So, if you’re not caught up on GOT, you should still be able to read this article. With the immense popularity of Game of Thrones, naturally people have started to talk about whether or not we could get a movie someday. Some people think they’ll finish the series with a full-length feature film. Some think that doing a prequel to the series in the form of a film would be a good idea. So what are the chances that we’ll get a Game of Thrones movie at some point or another? Personally, I do believe that somewhere down the line we will see the lands of Westeros and Essos on the big screen. It’s just a matter of how and when. Let’s start with the how. The notion that the series is going to conclude with a film that you’ll have to go to the theater to see is ludicrous. It’d be a bad investment for HBO to put it simply. While it may be the most popular film on television, they would still need to pull in audiences who haven’t seen the show. It’s expensive to make a single episode of Game of Thrones, much less a feature-length film. The amount of people that don’t watch Game of Thrones far outnumber the people that do. If they bring GOT to the big screen, it needs to be a story that people that don’t watch the show can understand. So, that completely negates the idea that the end of the show will be a movie. However, I do think that whenever the series finale is, it could end up being the length of a film, just on HBO. So, if HBO did want to move Westeros to the big screen, they’d have to do some sort of spinoff or prequel. Personally, I believe the chances of that happening are very great. A spinoff of Game of Thrones on the big screen could easily be just as popular as the actual show if done correctly. Therein lies the fine line they’d have to walk. You’d need to be very careful with a property like this. Fans are very passionate about this series, and if it doesn’t live up to expectations. There will be theoretical riots in the streets. If they were to do a Game of Thrones film, a prequel would seem to make the most sense. They tell so many stories in that show, and any one of them could make a fantastic film. The history of Game of Thrones goes back thousands of years, so there are a lot of stories that could be told. Personally, I’d like to see a film about Robert’s Rebellion. I think that could be really cool, and it’d lead straight into the series. Maybe even shed some light on that R+L=J theory? When this would happen is a completely other question. I’d expect one of two things. Either they have a film come out a few years after the series concludes, or they wait for twenty to thirty years and just reboot the entire thing in a series of movies. Believe me, I dislike needless reboots as much as the next person. That being said, studios speak in money, and there’s potentially a lot of money to be had in good reboots. So what do you think of a potential Game of Thrones film? Would you be interesting in seeing one? Let me know by commenting on this post!
