Hello, fellow moviegoers!
Star Wars is one of the most successful franchises out there right now. Actually, it’s probably the most successful film series of all time. However, despite its now eight theatrically released films (nine if you include the animated Clone Wars film), all of the films have stayed in the same PG – PG-13 rating area. Today, I want to ask a question. Will we ever see an R-rated Star Wars film? What are the chances of that happening? What would it be about? Here’s what I think.
First of all, it’d probably be good to discuss if an R-rated film in the Star Wars universe is even possible. By this I mean, would an R-rated film fit well inside the existing Star Wars universe. The simple answer? Probably. Think about it; all of the stories told in the Star Wars universe are in exactly that. A universe. There are so many different stories that could be told in that cosmos. There are many stories that could be told in this galaxy far far away that wouldn’t work in a PG or PG-13 film. Plus, not only has Star Wars gone darker in the past (Empire Strikes Back), but we also know that Disney isn’t afraid to take this franchise in that direction. I won’t mention spoilers, but there were some things that happened in Rogue One that tilted in a darker direction.
While Disney and Lucasfilm could always come up with their own, completely original, R-rated story to tell, that’s not going to stop fans from speculating. In fact, there are already several different Star Wars stories that are ripe for R-rated film adaptations. The most obvious choice would be a film based entirely around bounty hunters. We already know that Disney is interested in making a Boba Fett film, going so far to have a teaser ready for Star Wars Celebration a few years ago. Unfortunately, that teaser was scrapped after Josh Trank’s departure from the project, but I still believe that they’re very interested in making that film happen.
Another intriguing idea for an R-rated Star Wars film would be a film somehow based on the Sith. Whether it would be based on a specific Sith Lord or the founding of the Sith Order in general, that would be a movie that people would be interested in. Personally, I would love to see an R-rated adaptation of the tale of Darth Bane. For those of you who don’t know, Darth Bane was an ancient Sith that created the Rule of Two, which limits the Sith to only two, a master to have the power, and an apprentice to crave it. Darth Bane’s story is one that I believe could work really well on the big screen, and it would thrive in with an R-rating. (If you’re curious to know more about Darth Bane, I’d recommend watching the YouTube channel CivilizationEx’s series on the character. You can find a link here).
Probably the biggest question to ask when discussing the possibility of an R-rated Star Wars film would be, would Disney even allow that to happen? Well, Disney is a company whose goal is to make money. A Star Wars film that is rated R would make money. No doubt about that. Recently, films such as Deadpool and Logan have shown that a lot of people are willing to see new R-rated takes on existing franchises. That being said, this is Disney we’re talking about, a film company that has never made an R-rated film. Ever. So they probably wouldn’t put any legitimate thought into it. While many people, along with myself, would absolutely love to see it, it probably won’t happen. Though that is disappointing, never say never. They could surprise us.
