Hello fellow moviegoers! Chappie stars Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, Sharlto Copley, and Sigourney Weaver. It takes place in the near future where police forces have been replaced by robots coded to do police functions. But their creator (Patel) wants to go a step further and create a robot that can think for itself. This leads to the creation of Chappie. The film follows Chappie as he grows up living with a group of gangsters, meanwhile and Australian Hugh Jackman is plotting to get rid of the police robots and replace them with his own machine called "The Moose". This film looks really intriguing. How good is it really? So, there are a lot of critics out there saying Chappie is horrible and referring to it as "Crappy Chappie". While their opinions are worth no more or less than mine, I disagree. While this film is far from a masterpiece. It isn't terrible. That being said, it isn't good either. It starts off and it really just feels silly at first. One of the silliest things is that the police robots in this film have the most cliché robot voices ever. It is strange, because they are going for a realistic world, and then make the voices for this robots so cartoony. The movie kind of just moves along from there until we meet this group of gangsters, which also are completely cliché. There are the three main types of movie-gangsters. The impatient guy who is way too serious, the nice guy who just kind of tags along, and then the girlfriend of the serious guy who is a little too "soft". Speaking of these cliché gangsters, the performances given by these people are horrendous. They were just way over the top. The girl had the most annoying voice. She kind of sounded like Minnie Mouse at times. As Chappie interacts with these gangsters he starts to act like them. Then when he is swearing up a storm and walking around like he has a limp, it is straight up laughable. It just feels so out of place. Definitely one of the few good things about this film is the performance given by Hugh Jackman. I was curious to see him in a villain role, and he was pretty good. Throughout the entire film he was a really interesting character, because you could actually see where he was coming from, and you almost side with him a few times. But then the disappointing part is that in the last act they turned into just another cliché moustache-twirling villain. Noticing a theme here? Lots of clichés. The climax in the film was actually pretty cool though. The big fight scene was definitely something to be enjoyed at certain parts, but then at other parts it is just so over the top. It is a really interesting fight scene. Although they set it up to be a three-way fight, it really turns into one-on-one and kind of ignores the third party. While on the topic, let's talk about this third party. They are another group of gangsters and there leader is way too out there. He has one of the silliest haircuts I have ever seen, and his voice was painful to listen to. You know it's bad when this guy is speaking the main language of the film, and you have to give him subtitles so you can understand him. Come on dude, just pull back the accent-ish thing you're doing and actually let us comprehend what you are saying. I know it sounds like I am really bagging on this film, but overall it really isn't terrible. It is just way too over the top at times, and the twist at the end is interesting at first, but then they kind of beat you over the head with it. Overall, this movie is way too clichéd. It is predictable at times. Certain performances are cringe worthy. But, it does have some redeeming qualities. The best I can say about this movie is that it's alright. Meh. 5/10 So what did you think of Chappie? Do you hate it like most critics, or do you actually like it? Let me know by commenting on this post!
