Hello, fellow moviegoers! Captain Fantastic is written and directed by Matt Ross and it stars Viggo Mortensen. It tells the story of a family that raised their children in the forest to separate themselves from society and learn to live off of the land, though they do have the occasional trip to the grocery store. Viggo Mortensen is one of the most talented actors working right now, yet he keeps himself out of the spotlight and mainly does passion projects. So, whenever Mortensen is in a film, it's almost guaranteed to be good. So, how is Captain Fantastic? For lack of a better pun, Captain Fantastic is...fantastic! The best way I can describe this film is unique, in almost every way imaginable. It features interesting characters, an original story, and just the right amount of rebelliousness. Captain Fantastic makes you feel every emotion you can imagine. You cry, you laugh, you get frustrated, scared, nervous, excited, surprised, and most of all entertained. This is the type of film that you'll probably never hear of until one of your friends asks if you've seen it. You then proceed to watch it and love it. The performance given by Mortensen in this film is reason enough to see it. He gives what would be the performance of a lifetime for some actors, but for him, it's just what he does. The rest of the lead cast did great jobs as well, particularly George MacKay. There wasn't a bad performance given in this film, and those performances were only heightened by well-developed characters and brilliant dialogue. This film makes the great decision to not explain everything its characters are saying. Realistically, when people talk about something they're educated on, they don't have to explain it. They talk about it casually. In this film, they talk about things like communism and economics so casually that's it makes you feel as if you were extremely educated on the matter. This little detail made all of the conversations in the film so interesting, and much more entertaining to watch. Captain Fantastic is a very heartwarming film about a family coming together in a time of struggle. Meanwhile, it is also an interesting commentary on parenting, modern politics, and what it's like to grow up in today's world of the internet. Captain Fantastic, similarly to Birdman, is about so many different things and it has so many unique characters, yet it manages to keep it all relatively easy to follow. As of now, Captain Fantastic is my favorite film of the year so far. It's funny, it's heartwarming, and it's a great look at the world we live in today. After seeing this film, my friend and I were comparing it to the likes of 2014's Birdman and last year's Room, both of which won Academy Awards. Captain Fantastic is an amazing film. It's films like this that remind me why I love movies so much. It's such an original movie and it's one that you would be remiss not to see. 9.5/10 So what'd you think of Captain Fantastic? Did you love it as much as I did? Let me know by commenting on this post! Also, if you enjoyed this review, share it on Facebook and Twitter. It really helps!
