Are Video Game Movies the Next Big Thing in Hollywood?

1/4/2016

Hello, fellow moviegoers!
Two of the most anticipated films of 2016 by far are Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft. What do both of these films have in common? Besides great directors and excellent casts, they are both based on very popular video games. World of Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed are arguably some of the most popular video games in the past decade.
The potential awesomeness of these films has stirred quite the conversation. Are films based off of video games the next big trend in Hollywood? It’s a good question. Here’s my answer…

For arguments sake, let’s say that both Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed are critical and financial successes for their respective studios. They both have 100+ million dollar opening weekends and critics and audiences alike can’t stop talking about how great they are. What kind of effect would that have on the industry?
Understandably, if these two films are monumental successes, we will see plenty of studios making films based on video games. The question is, will it become the next big thing? Personally, I don’t think it will.
I would say it just gives Hollywood another medium to get ideas for films. The new flood of video game movies won’t be their own genre, rather, they will fit into a bunch of different genres, which comic-book films have even started to do recently. Yes, once upon a time comic-book films were their own genre. But now, they’ve started to spread out into several different ones, including superhero films.
There is a difference between comic-book films and superhero films. Think about it, films like Sin City, Men in Black, and even 300 are all based upon comics and graphic novels yet, they are not superhero films. Conversely, movies such as Hancock, The Incredibles, and Chronicle, are all superhero films, yet they are not based upon comic books.
I have a feeling that video game movies are going to be taking a very similar path. There will be one primary genre that video game movies will be in, the action/adventure genre. That being said, there will be video game films that will expand into other genres such as mystery, horror, and even dramas.
So no, I don’t think video game movies will be the next big thing because video games are just another source for Hollywood to take ideas from, just like novels, short stories, and comic books. Movies based off of video games may become more popular than they are now. But they won’t become the esteemed “next big thing” everybody is looking for.
