2016 Oscar Nominees Reaction

1/15/2016

Hello, fellow moviegoers!
The wait is finally over! The full list of this year’s Oscar Nominees has been revealed! What surprises were there? Who got snubbed? Here’s my reaction...
Picture
Overall, I think the Academy did a pretty decent job with their nominations this year. While there are a few very notable absences, there is nothing as big as The LEGO Movie from last year.
This year’s Oscar race seems to be all about the acting awards. While the films as a whole were fantastic, they seemed to be a little underwhelming. The performances are definitely where 2015 exceeded all expectations. I don’t necessarily think anybody got “snubbed”, but there are several actors and actresses that could have very easily have gotten nominated.
In particular, Will Smith in Concussion is somebody that I would have liked to see nominated. I have not seen Trumbo, but from what I’ve seen Smith could easily take Bryan Cranston’s spot for Best Lead Actor. Also notably absent are Michael Keaton (Spotlight), Johnny Depp (Black Mass),  Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) and Liev Schreiber (also from Spotlight).
On the more behind-the-scenes side of things, there were also several directors and screenwriters that got left out. Aaron Sorkin, the screenwriter of Steve Jobs, won the Golden Globe for best screenplay, yet didn’t even get nominated at the Academy Awards. Steve Jobs didn’t get a Best Picture nomination either. The Hateful Eight, on the other hand, was almost completely shut out. Jennifer Jason Leigh got nominated for Best Supporting Actress, but that was it. No Best Picture, no Best Director for Quentin Tarantino, no Best Original Screenplay, nothing.
Other than that, I thought The Academy got it pretty much right. It was great to see Ex Machina get nominated for its visual effects and also Best Original Screenplay. Although, I feel as if Alicia Vikander should have been nominated for Ex Machina rather than The Danish Girl.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens walked a
way with five nominations on the technical side. There are quite a few people out there that are upset that Star Wars didn’t get nominated for Best Picture. Personally, I loved Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but its chances of getting nominated or even winning Best Picture were always slim. While it would have been nice to see, I can understand why it wasn’t. What movie would you remove to make room for it?
