Hello, fellow moviegoers! Well, 2017 is here, and with it comes hopefully another great year in movies. If the movies coming out this year live up to their potential, 2017 could be an absolutely amazing year for film. There are so many films coming out this year that look like they could be a whole lot of fun. Here is the list of my ten most anticipated films of 2017. It was a hard list to make, but these are the films that stand out to me as something to be excited about. HONORABLE MENTIONS:
10. Kingsman: The Golden Circle I was expecting to like Kingsman: The Secret Service. I was not expecting to like Kingsman: The Secret Service as much as I did. It was a shame that not very many people actually went out and saw it. I was not expecting to get a sequel to this film, but low and behold, here we are talking about it. I would be excited about this movie no matter what, but throw Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum, and Elton John into the mix, and yeah, I’m looking forward to this. 9. Spider-Man: Homecoming If you know me, you know that I think Spider-Man is a little overrated. I don’t think he’s a bad character necessarily; I just think people make a way bigger deal out of him than he actually is. That being said, I absolutely loved Tom Holland’s portrayal of him in Captain America: Civil War. Marvel is going for a John Hughes (Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) vibe with their latest take on the character, and I think that it looks wonderful. Michael Keaton (who is one of my favorite actors) is playing the villain in the film. Spider-Man: Homecoming is definitely something to be looking forward to. 8. Wonder Woman Well, it’s about time. That’s pretty much all I have to say. Wonder Woman is one of the most popular comic-book characters out there, and she is finally getting her own movie. The character, portrayed by Gal Gadot, in Batman v Superman was one of the shining lights of that movie. Now, she’s getting her own film set in the first World War. The film co-stars Chris Pine, and based on the trailers we’ve gotten, it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun. I cannot wait to see how Wonder Woman plays out on the big screen! 7. Dunkirk Christopher Nolan is arguably one of the best directors working right now. He gained massive popularity with the Dark Knight trilogy, and the rest of his films have all lived up to their full potential (Yes, even Interstellar). This looks to be the average war drama that comes out every year. Knowing that it’s Christopher Nolan though, makes this film much more than average. Dunkirk is a different sort of film for Nolan to do, meaning that it’s not some wild film told backwards, or about dreams and space The trailer looked interesting, but in all reality, this film is on here exclusively because it’s directed by Christopher Nolan. 6. Kong: Skull Island The fact that this movie didn’t crack the top five on my list is a testament to how great the rest of the films on here look to be. When I heard they were making a new King Kong film, I wasn’t that excited. Kong is something we’ve seen over and over again in film, and I just couldn’t get excited for Skull Island. That was, until I saw the trailer. The trailer for this film not only made me look forward to seeing the film, it made me genuinely ecstatic about it. The all-star cast (John Goodman, Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson) are reason enough to be exited. Kong: Skull Island looks to be a gritty realistic take on the character, and it’s something we should all be excited for. 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Do I really need to say much other than this is a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy? I was already pumped for this movie, and the two trailers released so far have only increased that excitement. The first Guardians film was such a pleasant surprise, and it just might be my favorite Marvel movie overall. The sequel looks to up the stakes on every level, yet it keeps the heart that made the original so lovable. I’m not sure about Gunn’s claims that Baby Groot was a purely creative decision and not just for marketing and toys, but who am I kidding? Baby Groot looks hilarious. 4. Justice League A year ago, this film would have been my most anticipated film of 2017. Whatever you have to say about Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, I think we can all agree that they weren’t nearly as good as we wanted them to be. However, I have faith in these characters. I know that DC has some truly great characters and stories to tell, and I’m holding out hope that they’ll hit the nail on the head with Justice League. I thought the first teaser was really exciting, but I’m more curious as to how this film will turn out. If it lives up to its potential, we could be getting one of the best superhero films ever made with this one. 3. War for the Planet of the Apes I enjoyed Rise of the Planet of the Apes while I was watching it, I loved the ending that was kicked off by that scene (if you’ve seen the film you know what I’m talking about). I went into Dawn of the Planet of the Apes with the same expectation, and I was absolutely blown away. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes might just be on my top five films of the past five years. I loved it that much. So naturally, I’m over the moon about this new film. It’s the third film in this new series, and the trailer was fantastic! Andy Serkis as Caesar might be one of the greatest things to come out of filmmaking in the past few decades. I know I’m making a lot of big claims here, but I mean them wholeheartedly. War for the Planet of the Apes looks like it’s going to be another amazing entry in this series. 2. Logan This, ladies and gentlemen, is what a great trailer can do. I was not even excited for this film before the trailer dropped. It was more just “Oh, there making another Wolverine movie? That’s neat I guess.” Now? Well, now this movie is my second most anticipated film of the year. All because Fox put out a perfect trailer. I don’t mean perfect like “It was really good”, no I mean they put out a perfect trailer! The use of Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt” in the trailer added an emotional depth to it that was unlike anything I’d seen a trailer before. The day that that trailer was released online I watched it at least two dozen times. If the film is as amazing as the trailer was, Logan, a film about the comic-book character Wolverine, might have a legitimate shot at being nominated for Best Picture. 1. Star Wars: Episode VIII To some people, this is the obvious choice. To some people, this might be an obnoxious fan-boy pick for my most anticipated feature of the year. I don’t deny that, in fact, I openly admit it. Star Wars: Episode VIII is my most anticipated film of 2017 exclusively because I love Star Wars so much. The Force Awakens was (and still is) my favorite film of 2015. How could this film not be my most anticipated of the year? It’s continuing the story of this saga that I adore so much! I love these characters and this universe, and I want to know as much about it as possible. What’s wrong with that? So what movies coming out this year are you really looking forward to?
